Wiltspoon House by Fourteen a.m.
Design studio Fourteen a.m. has transformed Wiltspoon House through a thoughtful renovation and single-storey rear extension, crafting a calm, nature-inspired sanctuary that perfectly balances city living with tranquility.
Known for creating restorative spaces in urban environments, the studio has converted this typical two-storey London property into a bespoke long-term home for a couple and their Boston Terrier, Terrence. Applying their unique Mindfulness Design Method, the result is a living space that not only aligns with the clients' lifestyle but also demonstrates how mindful design can revolutionise urban living.
The lower ground floor has been reimagined with an extended kitchen and dining area that opens to the garden, creating a light-filled space where the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living gracefully blur. Two generous skylights bathe the space in natural illumination, while a cleverly positioned joinery unit houses a projector and screen, transforming the adjacent living room into a cozy cinema when desired.
The studio's commitment to holistic design is evident in every detail. A gym with a Japanese privacy screen occupies the front of the lower ground floor, allowing the homeowners to maintain their wellness routine without leaving their sanctuary. Upstairs, the sleeping quarters have been reimagined with a master bedroom that overlooks a verdant green roof - a biophilic touch that brings nature into the urban setting. A flexible guest bedroom doubles as a home office, reflecting contemporary living needs, while an enlarged bathroom provides a spa-like sanctuary.
Throughout the home, innovative storage solutions demonstrate the studio's practical ingenuity. A custom joinery unit discreetly houses laundry facilities, while the understair space doubles as an art gallery. The kitchen exemplifies this balance, combining IKEA foundations with bespoke panels from Custom Fronts to achieve high-end design at an accessible price point. The renovation's thoughtful touches extend to all family members - including Terrence, the couple's Boston Terrier, who enjoys a custom-designed sunbed by his favourite window.
Materials have been carefully selected to create a sense of tranquility. Cork flooring adds warmth underfoot, while an oak palette throughout maintains a natural, calming atmosphere. Even the entrance mat, inspired by Japanese stone raking, sets an intentional tone of mindfulness from the moment one steps inside.
