via. brings cultural heritage to the forefront in One Bedford Place, a Grade-A commercial tower in Hong Kong's Tai Kok Tsui district. The project marries traditional elements with modern workplace design to create a distinctive commercial environment.
Located in Kowloon, the 144,000-square-foot development features carefully curated interiors that weave together traditional elements with modern aesthetics. The monolithic lobby sets the tone with its restrained material palette, where a sculptural reception counter dialogues with a wood-slatted feature wall. Overhead, a sophisticated ceiling treatment combines polished nickel silver with grey natural stone.
"We wanted to create a layered, textured journey that speaks to Hong Kong's dynamic character," commented via. "The lift design, inspired by industrial folding gates, exemplifies this approach."
A dramatic spiral staircase, crafted from black veined stone with a reflective finish, anchors the space. Wooden handrails and metallic accents complement the stairway's sophisticated form, enhanced by subtle lighting along its outer shell.
Behind the staircase, the café space features a ceiling design inspired by Hong Kong's ubiquitous bamboo scaffolding. Digital wayfinding systems and custom iconography throughout the tower cater to a tech-savvy clientele.
The third floor houses a sky garden that functions as an urban sanctuary. Sculpture-like curved seating, protected by a weatherproof baffle ceiling, offers views across the city while fostering a sense of community reminiscent of Hong Kong's vibrant street life.
On the fifth floor, the Club space reimagines the essence of a traditional cha chaan teng within a contemporary context. The adjacent gym challenges conventional fitness facility design with a distinctive ceiling featuring illuminated hand-woven baskets – a reference to local dining culture. Retro green metal-meshed walls provide privacy while maintaining visual interest.
The lounge and conference areas further celebrate local heritage through thoughtful details: leather booths, informal seating arrangements, and salvaged antique mailboxes from the Bedford neighborhood. Mosaic-patterned carpets and shuttered windows complete the cultural narrative.
The project culminates in a roof terrace that serves as a communal gathering space. Featuring a dining table and recessed seating areas, this outdoor space captures the sociable atmosphere of Hong Kong's street culture in an elevated setting.
