Noodle In Transit by Office AIO
In Chongqing's historic Eighteen Stairs district, a renowned Sichuan noodle chain with over 1,000 branches unveils its ambitious flagship location. Office AIO has transformed this traditional noodle house into an atmospheric dining destination that seamlessly blends heritage with contemporary design.
This transformation marks a milestone for the brand as it establishes its presence in this historic district. With a carefully curated menu, the space honors its culinary roots while delighting patrons, creating an enchanting dining experience for both newcomers and regulars. The restaurant sits along a 400-meter stretch of 200 historic steps linking Chongqing's upper and lower districts. Following the area's 2021 commercial retrofit—which preserved its architectural character—Office AIO crafted a design that respects the site's cultural significance. Occupying the ground floor of a four-story building, the restaurant spans what appears to be four separate row houses. While the exterior façade maintains its distinct openings toward the main alley, the interior has been unified into an open, flowing layout.
The designers reimagined the storefront by creating a setback that forms a welcoming semi-public buffer zone. This transitional space, painted in the brand's signature warm red, serves multiple purposes - from casual seating to delivery pickup points. Carefully placed windows in a faux patchwork brick façade add depth while preserving the building's historic character.
Drawing inspiration from Chongqing’s omnipotent spirit of 1990s urbanization, the interior design celebrates the city’s bold architectural spirit. The space is anchored by two communal tables - stretching 9 and 12 meters respectively - that hover across the dining area. These tables, adorned with custom white checker patterns and red outline Formica cladding, extend through strategic wall openings to create fluid movement throughout the space.
Full-height walls with carefully placed openings serve as architectural gateways, echoing Chongqing’s iconic LiZiBa light rail station, where trains pierce through high-rises. Strategic mirror placement extends sight lines and emphasizes linear flow, while brushed aluminium cladding reflects light and movement, creating a kinetic, almost cinematic atmosphere. Custom Wastberg 'Semp' lamps, inspired by traditional Chinese hawker-style red pendants, illuminate the space. These fixtures are spaced above the long benches, casting a warm, inviting glow that enhances the dynamic interplay of light, reflection, and movement throughout the space.
In collaboration with T Workshop, Office AIO turned the restaurant's walls into a canvas of local street culture. Gradated murals evoke Chongqing's signature fog, while integrated calligraphy weaves in brand storytelling.
By offering both innovative menu items and a refreshing casual dining environment, this flagship location demonstrates the brand's versatility while bridging operational functionality with atmospheric design. The space honors Chongqing's cultural heritage while serving as a vibrant community hub, establishing itself as a must-visit destination in the city.
