Willner’s designs are the result of a deep exploration into the potential of waste materials. Through material development, upcycling, craft techniques, collaboration, and implementation, she has found ways to reintroduce residual materials into the manufacturing process of furniture design. Her designs are a testament to how waste can be refined and transformed into something functional, tactile, and aesthetically pleasing.
The project began with a detailed mapping of Fogia’s residual material streams in Poland, providing a better understanding of the materials’ complete lifecycle. From there, Willner explored the possibilities of these materials through small- and large-scale case studies. All designs in the exhibition are made out of waste like wood in various types and sizes, sawdust, textile fibre, and leather, that are all part of big waste streams from Fogia’s manufacturing process.
The collection includes handmade compositions of upcycled wood in the form of four vases, a table, and an armchair. Willner also produced a series of wall lighting sculptures featuring shades made of recycled Nature loft, a textile fibre from Fogias manufacturing process, using traditional paper-making techniques. The collection also includes a pair of crafted wet moulded leather vases, material samples containing a mix of sawdust and bone glue, and prototypes of a low table and pedestal designed by Willner and produced by Fogia using finger joint waste pine wood.
Crafted Potential is an exhibition that celebrates the opportunities that arise when we look at waste as an untapped material resource.
Willner’s work proposes a more liquid and scalable production model for future furniture manufacturers, where some products are produced in small scale, others in middle scale and some in mass production. It is an invitation to explore the beauty in waste and how different methods can inspire the implementation of systems where residual materials can achieve their full potential.
The exhibition celebrates all the opportunities with looking at waste as an untapped material resource. And how different methods can inspire to implement systems where residual materials can achieve their full potential.
