Beyond the Ordinary: A Look into Soil Studios’ Minimalist Show Flat Design Inspired by Hainan’s Wild Coastal Landscape and the Artistic Vision of a Creative Couple
Soil Studios is a multi-disciplinary design studio that embodies a spiritual force, intertwining creation, life, and faith. The Bayview Residence in Hainan reflects their artistic spirit, inspired by the coastal landscape and embracing undulating forms. This elegant home, built by an artistic couple, showcases their values and poetic outlook on life, merging art with existence. With organic curves, custom wood flooring, and vibrant oil paintings, the home becomes a serene haven and a work of art.
In Greek, "zographos" is the word for "painting," capturing the essence of a person who portrays life. Soil Studios transcends the canvas, merging art with existence, crafting a tangible and complete realm. For the studio, design embodies a spiritual force, where creation intertwines with life and faith. Their journey spans diverse landscapes, themes, media, and perspectives, interweaving the tapestry of cityscapes, cultures, architectures, and homes. They seek the raw moments that emerge from their worldview.
Soil Studios cultivates an ecological system of design, nature, and art, resonating with the poetic rhythm of undulating waves. They repeatedly emerge in spatial creation and design imagination, redefining life like a shape carved from the canvas.
Within the space's layered grayscale, time unfolds like sedimentary history, while undulating curves extend infinitely like the depths of the seabed. The natural wood texture evokes a profound connection with the essence of natural life. Unframed oil paintings powerfully exhibit the vibrancy, energy, and capricious weather of the tropics. Forms, textures, landscapes, and patterns manifest in physical elements, overlapping and influencing one another, mirroring the intricate connections within the tapestry of home life.
Together, they create a poetic way of life, infused with sincerity, hope, and profound knowledge. They delve into the core, seeking to establish an empathetic connection with the viewer's innermost sentiments towards existence. They allow the beauty and confidence of life to flourish in the interplay of moments.
The Bayview Residence, situated gracefully in Hainan, drew inspiration from the untamed coastal landscape. It embraced the sweeping waves and undulating forms that lie in the depths of the ocean floor. This artistic abode was built by a couple who embodied their poetic values and outlook on life. Jack and Hannah, their two young children, reveled in a serene haven that transcended the ordinary, merging art with their existence.
An elegant entryway unveiled the home's personality, exuding elegance, organic allure, and whimsical charm. Curved fluted wood panels provided a warm backdrop for a sleek travertine cabinet and an elongated glass fixture. Opposite stood a unique window, shaped like the human heart, offering glimpses into the kitchen.
Inside, the living and dining area seamlessly merged, opening up to a balcony adorned with lush garden views. A soft natural color palette of whites, creams, and earth tones enveloped the space in comfort and warmth.
Pendant lamps with exposed black cords gracefully descended above a grand oval Terrazzo dining table, its travertine legs exuding understated luxury. Behind the table, hand-painted wallpaper adorned the walls, featuring a minimalist crosshatch pattern by Mark Alexander. Sandblasted glass teardrop pendants hung freely from the ceiling, suspended by black cords, adding casual sophistication. Nestled behind them, the cozy Terrazzo-clad kitchen featured oak cabinetry.
The home's artistic spirit echoed through custom wood flooring, adorned with irregular shapes reminiscent of patterns on a turtle's shell. Furnishings swathed in luxurious silk cotton fabrics, complemented by marble and brass accents, added texture to the space. Vibrant oil paintings adorned the walls, injecting subtle drama while echoing the tropical surroundings.
The circular motif persisted, evident in the organic curved walls and the dramatic cove ceilings. A simple curved television console transformed into an artistic masterpiece, gracefully stretching across the wall and protruding into the entrance of the first bedroom like a sculptural object. This circular bedroom belonged to young Jack, where a custom-designed bed with a slide added an element of playful delight.
Gentle curves continued to embrace the furnishings in the master bedroom. A rattan bed imbued a tropical ambiance in this tranquil sanctuary. An accent wall, dressed in hand-painted beige wallpaper, juxtaposed against a dark wood panel, cocooned the space. In one corner, a sculptural in-built shelf, gracefully curved, served as a dressing table with a suspended mirror. Beside the windows, overlooking verdant views, rested a pair of plush low white sofas.
The master bathroom exuded tranquility and rejuvenation, with its fluted marble walls, Terrazzo shower, and understated wooden cabinetry. A stylish and eco-friendly Woodio basin, crafted from wood composite and resin, paired elegantly with minimalist bronze fixtures, completing the space. Soulful and sleek, this thoughtfully designed home served as both an oasis of peace and a veritable work of art.
