The Affordance Series is an extensive family of stainless-steel furnishings, designed to induce human behaviour and psychology. Through this collection, designers, niceworkshop hope to encourage users in contemplating the ‘interactions between furniture and people’, a relationship unconsciously induced into our daily lives.
The intrinsic and external properties of an object can be used to convey a message to its users, triggering he/she to perform a specific action or react in a certain manner. In other words, this suggests that we can associate certain uses, actions, or functions that occur according to the relationship users have with the furniture.
For example, a ball is place in front of you. We can throw the ball, we can kick it, or we can roll it. All of these actions are ultimately what the presence of a “ball” has caused us to react. The Affordance Series borrows this form of ‘rollers’ and industrial ‘lifts’ of a conveyor belt where clear movements are repeated as ‘a divide for using furniture’. Given the right cues, the users will be compelled to perform a ‘natural reaction’ based on the his/her experience without any explanation as to what actions are possible or what may happen.
