Tanuki by Matters & Made
Located in Double Bay, Sydney, Tanuki is a contemporary Japanese izakaya that blends tradition with modernity. This multi-space restaurant and cocktail bar, designed by Matters & Made, draws inspiration from the principles of Wabi Sabi while embracing its vibrant suburban surroundings.
The design creates a seamless integration between indoor and outdoor spaces through architectural elements and custom-made furnishings. Taking cues from the textural richness of Japanese street food establishments, the designers have elevated these elements to create a sophisticated dining environment that maintains authenticity while delivering a refined experience.
The venue's layout encompasses several distinct areas, including a raw bar, robata grill, and an internal courtyard, each contributing to the space's dynamic atmosphere. The material palettes create environments that are both authentic and evocative, reflecting the venue's dual identity as both a refined Japanese eatery and an atmospheric late-night dining destination.
Like its namesake - the shape-shifting Tanuki of Japanese folklore - the space transforms from day to night. The restaurant's evolving ambiance is complemented by an innovative Japanese-inspired beverage program, creating a dining experience that adapts to different moments throughout the day while maintaining its distinctive character.
