We met, softened,

then we floated away.

A repetition beyond dimensions.

“In my childhood memories, my families were always away on business trips and I was sent to attend boarding school at a very young age. Growing up, I became used to flying back and forth. Short reunions, long-term separation, and starting life in a brand new environment have all gotten so familiar to me; yet objects in daily life that embody implicit meanings and far-away love always bring my family and me closer, and drive me to face the unfamiliar and loneliness.”

An excerpt by Lang Lang, founder of No.29.

To explore the overlapped duality of life, this mixed-media project records the connections between families and loved ones through manufacturing surreal scenarios and embracing the idea of memories in objects.

“The shapes of butter are inspired by furniture and retro electronics, while the flavours are inspired by childhood snacks.”

The narration starts with moving and still images of life interweaved with recordings of family phone calls, and the constant appearance of ‘butter’, a souvenir that the elder members of the family often bring back to me from the flight of their business trips. The narration continues with an on-site sharing table where butter will be transformed as carriers of memories and emotions.

The shapes of butter are inspired by furniture and retro electronics, while the flavours (smoked sea salt, seaweed, lavender lemon, white sesame miso and dark chocolate pine nuts) are inspired by childhood snacks. Guests are invited to deconstruct and enjoy the ‘sculpture’ through an overall sensory experience.
