Our Pilates by Victoria Merrett Architects

Gentle curves and natural textures define a new Pilates studio in coastal Victoria, where architecture practice Victoria Merrett Architects has transformed a commercial space into a serene wellness sanctuary that bridges digital and physical realms.

The 86-square-metre studio in Sorrento marks the first brick-and-mortar location for Our Pilates, a wellness platform that has built a substantial following through its online offerings. The space exemplifies a growing trend of digital-first brands expanding into physical locations, with every design choice supporting the brand's commitment to mindful movement and holistic wellbeing.

"We approached the design with intention to create a space that would honor both the physicality of Pilates practice and the mental clarity it cultivates," explained Victoria Merrett, principal architect of the project. "Every design decision was made in service of this duality."

The studio's interior employs a subdued color scheme, with warm whites and soft beiges creating a canvas for movement and meditation. Natural materials provide rich textural depth—hand-troweled lime plaster walls contrast with white oak flooring, while custom joinery in bleached timber adds functional elegance. These elements are complemented by gently curved partition walls that create distinct zones while maintaining visual connectivity throughout the space.

Strategic floor-to-ceiling mirrors maximize natural light and create an illusion of expanded space while enabling movement observation during classes. The mirror’s bronze-tinting add subtle warmth that complements the overall material palette.

The layout accommodates both mat work and reformer equipment, with careful consideration given to circulation patterns and sight lines. Custom storage solutions integrate seamlessly into the walls, preserving the studio's minimalist aesthetic while keeping equipment easily accessible.

Lighting shapes the space's atmosphere through a blend of recessed linear fixtures and adjustable spotlights, creating varying moods throughout the day. Morning classes benefit from abundant natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows, while evening sessions use controlled lighting to create an intimate atmosphere.
