another bureau of design is a Melbourne-based studio working across furniture, lighting, and object design. In their latest body of work, The Corner Collection, the studio presents a series of seating forms reminiscent of gable-roofed houses. With a unique artisanal sensibility, this collection reimagines a child’s drawing of a house, transforming these simple lines into a playful yet functional object through the use of metal and wood.
The Corner Stool was first introduced at the NGV Melbourne Design Week 2020 at Alt Material’s Ductility Exhibition and has since evolved into a collection that encompasses a stool, bench, and lounge chair. These additions are an intuitive expansion of its initial concept which is further expressed through new materials and finishes.
Designer Abdé Nouamani collaborated with Melbourne-based photographer Annika Kafcaloudis to shoot the collection on a day that was most Melbourne-like, with the sun, rain, and wind in one day. “The concept behind the shoot was to document the journey from a workshop to a photo studio, in this case taking the collection from my workshop in Preston to Gale Street Studios in Brunswick East,” shares Abdé.
The studio concentrates on process and materials, exploring their inherent qualities and expanding on their capabilities. Each piece balances simplicity with innovation while challenging our perception of familiar forms.
The Corner Collection was first introduced in aluminum but is now also available in other materials and finishes. Metal panels are cut, folded, and carefully welded together to create each form. Each surface is then finished by hand and sealed. The nature of the finishing method - as well as the selection of the timber planks for the wood-alternative - makes each piece of the collection entirely individual. Each piece is a signed and numbered edition.
